Sometimes you just need a little puck luck.

Many of the bounces are finally going the Rangers way. This team is rolling to open up 2023. They snapped the Hurricanes 11-game win streak Tuesday and beat the Canadiens on Thursday. They are 11-2-1 in their last 14 games. On Wednesday morning, they announced they signed winger Jimmy Vesey to a two-year contract extension worth $800,000 a year. What a bargain.

To talk about the win Tuesday, where the team stands and the Vesey extension, we bring you a new episode of the “Up In The Blue Seats” podcast with Mollie Walker, Larry Brooks and me. You can listen below, subscribe wherever you get podcasts or watch the entire show below on the New York Post Sports YouTube page.

Up In The Blue Seats Podcast with Jake Brown & Mollie Walker:

  • ENDING HURRICANES WIN STREAK: It was a good win for the Rangers Tuesday ending the Hurricanes 11-game win streak. They are getting some puck luck and playing good hockey right now.
  • JIMMY VESEY EXTENSION: Rangers got him for a bargain at $800,000 a year. Vesey wanted to get this done. He loves playing for the Rangers and wanted to stay here. Once that offer was out there, he wanted to get it done.
  • SUBTEXT QUESTIONS: Would the Rangers consider trading Alexis Lafreniere before the trade deadline? Is Ben Harpur the answer for the 6th defenseman spot? How would you rank the most important Rangers players to keep long-term? Concerns with Vitali Kravtsov’s inconsistencies?

Larry Brooks Interview:
NY Post Rangers/NHL columnist

  • VESEY CONTRACT: Larry wrote about why it should happen Saturday. Four days later, it happens. This was a smart move for a player that has played his role extremely well. He’s a coaches’ dream. It’s an important signing for them.
  • DEFENSEMEN CONTRACTS/PAIRINGS: It’s going to be tricky trying to pay all of their defensemen. They will have to look at how they are going to keep Ryan Lindgren. Hard to see how it’s all going to fit. Should the Rangers consider moving Braden Schneider up and spread out the Jacob Trouba/K’Andre Miller pair?
  • TRADE DEADLINE TARGETS: Who could the Rangers be going after before the trade deadline comes on March 1? What positions do the Rangers need to go after to get better?
