Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are outgrowing their home.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are being compelled to stay in their “cramped” Adelaide Cottage residence at Windsor, despite it being “too small” for their family.
Middleton, 41, and William, 40, moved in with their children Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, in the summer of 2022 from their former home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk.
A source told OK! recently that the Cambridge clan has agreed to stay living at the cottage, even though they have been contemplating taking over Prince Andrew’s longtime abode, the Royal Lodge.
“[Buckingham Palace] originally wanted Andrew out of Royal Lodge so that the property could be renovated and prepared for new lodgers,” the insider explained.
“The Prince and Princess of Wales desperately want a larger property for their family in the Windsor area and discussions were originally focused on putting them in there,” they continued.
King Charles has been trying to get Andrew, 63, to leave the $46 million mansion since April and is persuading him to move into Frogmore Cottage, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s former property.
The Duke of York has lived in the lodge since 2002 and is refusing to leave.
As for Adelaide Cottage, the house has four bedrooms for William and Middleton’s kin, however, the tiny space is still an issue for them.
“There are other things that need to be considered. Staff and other elements need to be factored in,” the source went on.
The cottage is also meant to be a place of work and there is no room to have guests or to set up an office.
“They were looking for a larger home but have now resigned themselves to the fact that they will be stuck in the cottage due to other properties not opening up for them,” the insider added about the couple’s predicament.
Royal expert Jennie Bond gave some insight into the situation and explained to the British outlet how William and Middleton chose their current home because they desired to give their three kids a more “normal” life.
However, the pair isn’t completely bound to their cottage, as they also have their apartment at Kensington Palace and their larger Norfolk house.
Adelaide Cottage was constructed in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, who was the monarch of Great Britain and Ireland and was married to King William IV.
The bungalow was also famously the quarters of Group Captain Peter Townsend, equerry to King George VI and Princess Margaret’s lover in 1944.
He even described it in his 1978 autobiography “Time and Chance” that it was an “icebox” that only had two radiators.
