Oral Roberts catcher interrupts Jose Trevino interview with terrific throw

It has been nine seasons since Jose Trevino spent games behind the plate with Oral Roberts, but the Yankees catcher was still thrilled Friday — during a live ESPN interview — when the Golden Eagles’ current catcher threw out a runner in the College World Series.

With one out in the second inning, catcher Jacob Godman jumped out of his stance and fired down to second base when Texas Christian University second baseman Tre Richardson tried stealing on Oral Roberts starting pitcher Jakob Hall.

“Let’s go, baby,” Trevino said, as he interrupted the ESPN broadcaster’s call. “Let’s go. That’s awesome. Good throw.”

And when the broadcast said that TCU might review the play, Trevino jokingly said, “Nah, no replay. No, no, no. No replay allowed.”

The Horned Frogs did challenge the play, but the call on the field was confirmed — and the Golden Eagles had recorded the second out of the inning.

“I thought, good pitch, good exchange and a good throw, you know what I mean?” Trevino told the ESPN broadcasters. “Great exchange. Great throw.”

Before he began his MLB career, Trevino played three seasons at Oral Roberts between 2012 and 2014, when he logged time in the infield his freshman year before moving to catcher as a sophomore.

This season with the Yankees (entering Friday night), Trevino has hit .217 in 39 games, missing some time in May with a left hamstring strain.

Despite Godman’s throw, which prevented TCU from having a runner in scoring position, Oral Roberts still trailed by three runs entering the ninth inning.

But three consecutive singles to start the frame erased one run off the deficit, giving the Golden Eagles runners on first and second.

Then, after one out, Blaze Brothers launched a homer over the left-field fence, and in their first College World Series appearance since 1978, the Golden Eagles won their first game and will face the winner of the Florida-Virginia game on Sunday.
