Indian Wells is officially Upset City.
In the second round of the BNP Paribas Open, No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic was improbably knocked out by No. 123 Luca Nardi.
Even wilder, the 20-year-old Nardi — who has posters of Djokovic in his childhood bedroom — came into the tournament as an injury replacement after having lost his match that would have qualified him.
“I think that before this night no one knew me,” the Italian upstart said following the shocking win, via the ATP. “I hope that the crowd enjoyed the game. I’m super happy with this one.”
However, there’s a lot more tourney to be played.
On Wednesday, March 13, the men’s and women’s singles matches determine the eight competitors that will duke it out in the BNP Paribas quarterfinals.
Big names still in the game include Coco Gauff, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, and Aryna Sabalenka at the Open’s three stadiums.
Nardi is slated to face off against American player Tommy Paul.
And if you want to get in on the action, last-minute tickets are still available.
