All eyes continue to be on Scottie Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, as the couple awaits the arrival of their first child.
The two-time major winner — who is coming off his second Masters win — will miss this week’s Wells Fargo Championship as the second major of the year, the PGA Championship, tees off later this month.
Scheffler, the world’s current No. 1, is still named on the PGA Championship field list that was posted Tuesday.
He tied for second in last year’s event, with Brooks Koepka claiming the top prize for his fifth major win and third overall at the tournament.
Baby watch became a storyline at the Masters in April, when it was reported the 27-year-old Scheffler would leave Augusta National early if Meredith went into labor.
He told reporters following the opening round, where he shot a six-under 66, he’d be “ready to go at a moment’s notice.”
“As far as her going into labor, I wouldn’t say I’m very concerned, we haven’t seen any of the early signs, but pregnancy is weird and it can happen at any time. But, yeah, open lines of communication and she can get ahold of me if she needs to,” he said at the time.
In terms of the couple’s preparedness for parenthood, Scheffler offered a candid response.
“People have asked us how our preparation is going for the baby and it’s like, well, I feel like we are a little underprepared. The nursery isn’t quite ready and we’ve had some issues at our house the last few weeks. I think that’s the exciting part. I think we are definitely underprepared to be parents,” Scheffler said.
Upon clinching his second green jacket with a final-round 68 for an 11-under par for the weekend, Scheffler shared a special message to Meredith, who was watching from home.
“I’ll be home as quick as I can,” Scheffler said in a post-tournament interview, according to Golf.com. “I love you and I’m coming home.”
Meredith, who wed Scheffler in 2020, was at Augusta in 2022 when he edged out Rory McIlroy for his first Masters win.
She supported Scheffler during his Player’s Championship win at TPC Sawgrass in March.
Though Scheffler is sitting out of the Wells Fargo Championship, he hasn’t missed a swing.
Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine reported Saturday that Scheffler “was keeping his game sharp Thursday at Maridoe GC in Carrollton, Texas,” where he played with former Cowboys quarterback-turned-CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo.
The 2024 PGA Championship runs from May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club.
